What is an RCFE?
Direct answer
An RCFE, or Residential Care Facility for the Elderly, is California's license for assisted living. RCFEs provide housing, meals, supervision and help with daily activities, and they range from small residential homes to large communities. They are licensed by the California Department of Social Services' Community Care Licensing Division.
What to know
Every RCFE operator needs its own license, so a buyer must be licensed before taking over.
RCFE administrators must complete an 80-hour certification program and pass a state exam.
Most California RCFEs are small homes. Commercial RCFEs of 16 or more beds are a smaller market and often sell confidentially.
